If you’re looking for a versatile shoe that fits all your travel needs, let me put you on to Vessi’s. I first discovered Vessi three years ago and have been obsessed with their design concept. Now I’ve had the opportunity to try 2 of Vessi’s new products, and after putting them through the travel test the last three months, I’m excited to tell you all about them.
If you’re unfamiliar with Vessi shoes, Vessi is a Canadian brand! They’re a Vancouver based and founded brand that’s famous for selling waterproof shoes. And no, I don’t mean waterproof as in rubber boots. Vessi has developed a one-of-a-kind 100% waterproof KNIT sneaker . So basically, they don’t use a waterproofing chemical that wears away. The waterproofness comes from the actual fabric the shoe’s made of.
One of my concerns with a waterproof sneaker was that it would be too hot and not breathable for hot, summer weather. To put my theory to the test I first took my Vessi’s on a weekend trip to the Southern Gulf Islands. I walked on the ferry as a foot passenger in 20 C + degree weather and did A LOT of walking on hot pavement. Even though the weather was warm, the Drymatex material Vessi uses regulated my feet for the hot temperature and to my surprise my feet stayed comfortable the whole time.
Looking at the soft and cushiony knit material, I was skeptical that Vessi’s would keep my feet dry if fully submerged. However, I took my Vessi’s on daily walks along the beach and they kept me dry while I stepped into the ocean. Just be sure to not submerge past the opening of the shoe or water will get in from the top.
The waterproof aspect is also great when camping, since I can do things like fill up my water filter or move around a muddy campsite in a comfortable shoe without worrying about getting my feet soaked. Sometimes if I have space, I’ll even pack my Vessi’s as a basecamp shoe when backpacking, since they weight less than a pound and are surprisingly packable in my backpack.
From the perfect basecamp shoe to a stylish kick for toughing out Tofino’s rain, I’ll admit that my Vessi’s have become a travel essential for me. I think they’re a great practical shoe, but unlike similar brands out there, Vessi has managed to implement a chic style element to their products.
