Easy DIY Wire Flower Ring

  • by

If you have been following my blog for awhile now, you may have noticed that I have made quite a few things from the same spool of wire. For a quick recap, I got a spool of 20 gauge wire from Michaels for six dollars and have been using it to create LOADS of handmade jewelry.

From spiral hoops to faux double piercings, I’ve had a lot of fun experimenting with different shapes and styles!

Before this, I was primarily making earrings because they are so easy to make and learn. However, last week I branched off into a whole new world of jewelry making and took a whack at making some wire rings. Let me tell you, I am completely blown away by how successful they were!

I made these flower rings in fifteen minutes using only 14 inches of wire per ring (my tiny spool came with 6 yards of wire). I already had gold-coloured wire on hand so I made it with that, but have considered painting the petals with nail polish to create a more customized, multi-coloured look.

Another great thing about this project is that the materials you’ll need for these flower wire rings are inexpensive and easy to source out. Like I said, I got my spool of wire from Michaels in the jewelry making/beading section for six dollars, but you can also source some out from your local craft store or even Amazon.

I also already had the proper pliers for this project on hand, so I didn’t need to go buy some. However, what you’ll need (if you don’t already have them) are needle nose pliers. They’re basically just really small and pointy pliers that make it easier to bend the wire into perfect petal/flower shapes.

These pliers also aren’t hard to find and you can usually find a pair for under ten dollars at a hardware store (like these ones from Home Depot) or again, from Amazon. Be aware that most of these smaller pliers don’t cut wire so for cutting wire, you can use literally any pair of “regular” pliers that you have on hand such as bigger hardware pliers (my dad keeps many in his toolbox).

Look how pretty they turned out! I had fun playing around with the sizes too, creating a thumb ring, pinky ring and even a toe ring (I may have gone a little overboard with this project). I seriously recommend this project for anyone who wants to start up a rewarding hobby but doesn’t have a lot of time or money to dedicate to it. I found that sitting down and playing around with these rings was a nice break in between online school lectures!

Step by Step Instructions

Materials

  • craft wire (I used 20 gauge brass wire)
  • needle nose pliers
  • something to cut wire with
  • cylindrical object that’s close to your finger size, to wrap wire around (I used a highlighter and a lipstick)

Steps

  1. To start, cut off a 14 inch piece of wire.
  2. Starting one inch away from the left side of the wire, twist the wire over and around the pliers to create the first petal.
  1. Repeat four more times, keeping the pliers as close to the previous petal so that the petals are grouped close together. This will create the flower.
  1. Once the flower is complete, play around with the petals to mould them to your liking. Now take the long side of the wire and wrap it down and around the middle of the flower to secure all of the petals together.
  1. If the petals got a little bent/seperated in the previous step, simply bend them back into place with the pliers.
  2. Now, using a cylindrical shaped item like a marker or lipstick, hold the flower in place on the cylinder with the short end of the wire pointing down. Wrap the long side of the wire around the cylinder twice.
  1. Cut each end of the wire so that there is about half an inch of extra wire left on each side.
  2. Use the pliers to wrap one side of the excess wire clockwise around the ring, and the other side counter clockwise (you can tell which way to wrap the wire by looking at which way its naturally bending towards).
  1. Reshape the petals to the way you like them and make sure you flatten any pointy parts by squishing them with the pliers.
  2. And that’s all! You can leave the ring how it is or you can opt to paint the petals with nail polish for a more colourful and custom design.
