If you live in Vancouver, you’ve probably walked down Main Street and all of the trendy stores/cafes it has to offer. As a broke university student, I made the great mistake of planning a friend date to go grab an overpriced cup of coffee and spend an afternoon window shopping through all the trendy stores Main Street has to offer.
I walked into one of those (for lack of better word) aesthetic boutiques that don’t seem to sell anything particularly useful but are instead full of beautiful lifestyle goods like home decor and fashion accessories. I ended up gravitating to these claw clips that were lined with rhinestones and fake pearls. Sounds tacky, right?
NO. It wasn’t tacky. It was cute AF. It was also $20. And I couldn’t justify spending that much on a hair clip.
So like the resourceful problem solver I am, I got mad, declared “I can make that myself” and went home.
Turns out, the dollar store isn’t the worst place to find claw clips. I found three claw clips for $1.50 a piece. I also found faux pearls and rhinestone stickers for an additional $2 AND I even went above and beyond and bought some regular faux pearl beads as well.
The process looked like this: using a glue that will securely hold to plastic, glue the beads onto the hair clips. Easy stuff.
I used my hot glue gun for this project but if you’re not at that level of crafty yet, you could use E6000 or regular gorilla glue.
I first tried using the regular faux pearl beads but noticed after my glue dried that it was harder for them to stick on with the constant wear and tear that comes with a claw clip. So for this project, I would recommend the stickers or to use half cut beads instead (they offer more grip and glue better to the surface). These are easy to find at the dollar store or on Amazon.
Overall, it took me about 30 minutes to bejewel all three claw clips. You know I’m a sucker for a quick, therapeutic craft session so to me, this was 100% worth it compared to spending $20 on the ones at the boutique.
Supplies
- extra strong hot glue or strong glue like E6000
- faux pearls, rhinestones or stickers (ones that are flat on one side work better for this project)
- claw clips (source out cheap ones from the dollar store, I was surprised by the quality!)
Instructions
- Wash the claw clips with soapy water or wipe down with a spray cleaner and wipe dry.
- Glue the beads/rhinestones/stickers onto the claw clips in a line on the edges of clips.
- Let sit for 24 hours so that the glue can set.
- Rock those new hair clips! Nobody will know the difference from these and the overly priced ones at the boutique 😉
